July 28, 2014 - SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Frank Bigelow, R-O’Neals, today joined area Senator Ted Gaines and Assemblywoman Beth Gaines in sending a letter to Governor Brown urging him to declare a State of Emergency in response to the Sand Fire that broke out on Friday.  The text of the letter is below:

July 28, 2014

Honorable Edmund Gerald Brown, Jr.
Governor, State of California
State Capitol, Governor’s Office
Sacramento, CA 95814

Dear Governor Brown:

On behalf of our constituents, we request that you proclaim the Counties of Amador and El Dorado to be in a State of Emergency due to the devastating Sand Fire that began on July 25, 2014.

This declaration will aid the counties in obtaining the Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”). Without this grant assistance, the salary, equipment, and billable costs of this fire will clearly exceed the capacity of these small, rural communities. The Sand Fire is a Type 1 incident and the second highest priority in the state. Approximately 3,800 acres have been burned, including 13 homes and 38 minor structures.  Five hundred residences are threatened, resulting in the forced evacuation of hundreds of residents.  This fire event has been devastating to the communities affected.

The Fire Management Assistance Grant, only available after a State Emergency Declaration, will reduce the financial burden on these counties by eighty percent, preventing financial disaster. We now request your favorable and immediate consideration of this request on behalf of our constituents and the Counties of Amador and El Dorado.

Sincerely,

Ted Gaines
Senator, 1st District

Beth Gaines
Assemblymember, 6th District

Frank Bigelow
Assemblymember, 5th District

CC: Gavin Newsom, Acting Governor of California
