May 3, 2017 - Merced Irrigation District is undertaking work to bolster a channel downstream of Lake McClure’s spillway. There is no immediate risk to New Exchequer merced irrigation district logoDam, the Lake McClure spillway or any other associated facility. The work will bolster a section of the existing channel below the spillway. Traffic may be impacted by some heavy-equipment vehicles, which will share the road with visitors traveling to Lake McClure during the month of May.

The spillway has not had to divert water around Lake McClure in the last 50 years. No releases were made through the spillway earlier this year, nor are any expected later this summer. The work is voluntarily being done by Merced Irrigation District in coordination with both the California Department of Water Resources Division of Safety of Dams and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. It is expected to be completed by May 31.

Lake McClure remains at about 67 percent full, providing 330,000 acre feet of available space for spring and summer snowmelt. The reservoir is at elevation 808 feet, about 60 feet below the lake’s maximum operating level. With a capacity of just over 1 million acre feet, Lake McClure serves multiple purposes: water supply, flood control, hydroelectricity and recreation.
