Regional Council of Rural Counties: Bill to Eliminate Supervisor’s Pension Defeated
During January 2012 an Assembly committee heard and subsequently defeated a measure that would eliminate the ability of future county supervisors (and other non "full-time" elected officeholders) from participating in a public retirement system. Joining representatives in law enforcement, labor and county superintendent of schools, Sierra County Supervisor Lee Adams testified on behalf of Regional Council of Rural Counties (RCRC) before the Assembly Public Employees, Retirement & Social Security Committee that Assembly Bill 738 (Hagman) would have a chilling effect on those willing to serve on county boards of supervisors in small, rural counties.
While RCRC does not have an official "oppose" position, the author and Committee were made aware of RCRC’s concerns (click here for the letter). The RCRC Board of Directors is slated to formally consider AB 738 when it meets on January 18th in Sacramento. While AB 738 failed, members of the Committee indicated that portions of the bill will be incorporated into a broader conversation about public pensions.
