MG Heritage RoseHeritage Rose Workshop Comes to Coulterville

Have you traveled local country roads and seen a rose bush thriving in the middle of a pasture or growing somewhere with little or no care?  It could be one of the roses brought here by foothill pioneers.

Mariposa County Master Gardeners will present a free workshop on these hearty roses Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Old Schoolhouse at the corner of Broadway and Cemetery streets in Coulterville. If you plan to attend, please pre-register on line at: cemariposa.ucanr.edu or call (209) 966.2417.

Rosarian Fred Boutin, one of the organizers of the Heritage Rose Society who helped establish the Heritage Rose Garden in the Old Sacramento City Cemetery, and former biologist at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in Pasadena, is the first presenter.  He will discuss a variety of topics including what qualifies as a heritage rose,  what heritage roses still survive in our area, and why we need to work to preserve them

Former Master Gardener Connie Welch will lead participants in taking cuttings from local heritage roses so they can have new bushes from old.
