Not since the flood of 1997 has Mariposa County Unemployment numbers been so high as the current numbers are at 14.6%. In January 1997 the rate was at 21.8% as 1,400 residents were without a job. That compares with 1,350 residents that were without a job for January 2010. Going back to January of 1990 this January has the second highest unemployment rate recorded by the California Employment Development Department.

During the 1990’s the Unemployment rate in Mariposa County was consistently in the double digits during January except for 1990 when the rate was 9.1%.  1991 was 10.5%, 1992 was 11.8%, 1993 was 14.0%, 1994 was 14.7%, 1995 was 13.0%, 1996 was 16.5%, 1997 was 21.8%, 1998 was 11.5% and 1999 was 11.3%
The rate from 2000 to 2008 was in the single digits.

The Mariposa County Unemployment rate for January 2010 is at 14.6 % (Prelim). A Rise of  2.0% from the December 2009 (revised 12.6 %) report and 1.9% higher than January 2009.
1,350 residents were out of work. That is 230 More residents who were unemployed compared to January 2009.

The State of California unemployment rate for January 2010 was 13.2% A Rise of 1.0% from the December 2009 (revised 12.2 %) report and 2.9% higher than January 2009.

The United States unemployment rate for January 2010 was 10.6%  A rise of .9%  from December 2009 (revised 9.7%) and 2.1% higher than January 2009.

The above numbers are not adjusted for seasonality.

7,920 people were employed during January in Mariposa County a Decrease of 5.1% , (430 Workers) from December of 2009 and 210 more people were employed compared to January 2009.  That is a 2.7% Increase. 

1350 individuals were out looking for work. That compares to 1200 residents who were looking for work in December 2009 and 1,120 in January 2009, a 20.5% Increase.

Of the 7,920 employed workers, 1,860 work for the government, 2,000 work in the leisure and hospitality industry and 20 individuals work on farms.

In January 2010, 2,000 people worked in the leisure and hospitality industry compared to 2,010 in December 2009 a Decrease of 10 workers or about .5%.
January 2010 had a Increase of 120 jobs in that field from January 2009 or about 6.4%.

Year to year figures for construction show a 20.0% Decline, from 150 to 120 jobs.
Year to year figures for manufacturing show a 0.0% Decrease as the same number of workers were in that field.
Usually a bright spot, even the Government had a 10.1% Decrease in jobs from December 2009.  That is 210 less workers in Government for January 2010 compared to December 2009. Year to year numbers show an increase of 20 workers.

The civilian labor force which is the total of all workers, those working and those that are unemployed has Increased by 440 workers from January 2009 to January 2010.
The Civilian labor force data are by place of residence; include self-employed individuals, unpaid family workers, household domestic workers, & workers on strike.
