What happened to Mariposa County with the 2010 census?

At the beginning of the 2010 census, Mariposa was right at the top in California with returning the completed census. So far the County has a return rate of 57%.  That compares to a 60% return rate in 2000. The State of California is averaging 71% and nationally the average is 72% for the 2010 census.

Possibly the talk of all the guns in Mariposa County is keeping some census workers at bay.

I have never been contacted by a census worker or received anything in the mail. About a month ago I called the Census office and asked if I could receive one to mail in and they said it was too late to mail……..oh well.

My wife and I were never counted. Never received anything in the mail, no phone calls, nothing. Then one day here comes a census taker (a young lady) knocking on the door and asking about our neighbor's property which is abandoned and is very evident that nobody lives there. My wife tells the census taker that we never received anything to which the census taker replied "I remember coming back here but I was cautious about the neighbor's dog (another neighbor) so maybe I forgot to leave you anything". She said she would follow up but to this date nothing. Cases like this may explain the dismal 57% return.

The Sierra Sun Times contends that: " Possibly the talk of all the guns in Mariposa County is keeping some census workers at bay ".
The City of Oakland, boasting the highest crime rate in the state, ( Murder: 109 __Forcible Rape: 268 __Robbery: 2,474 __Aggravated Assault: 2,762 ) has a reported 68% census return. So Sierra Sun Times suggests that the low 57% census return in Mariposa County could be attributed to: the willingness of A census worker to risk life and limb, walking the streets of Oakland CA. but cowers at the thought of knocking on the door of a law abiding Mariposa County citizen who may or may not own a fire arm. Yea, thats it. Mariposa Gun ownership is the problem. P L E A S E !!

What will the family historians do in several generations when they try to find their families that lived in Mariposa County. 57% is pretty deplorable.

Either the Census counters, or more likely, the United States Post Office LOST the written form returned from my family. Anyone else mail their form in, only to find a Census Worker at the front door?
