You are cordially invited to a First Day of Sale Ceremony for the newest
Yosemite stamp this Thursday, August 14, at 10:30 in front of the Yosemite Valley Post Office. The new stamp, the latest installment of the American Treasures series, features the Albert Bierstadt painting of Yosemite Valley. Special caches will be available which include the stamp, exclusive first day cancellation (available only here in the park), previous Yosemite stamps, and other great stuff. Bill Carroll, the Yosemite Postmaster, Superintendent Mike Tollefson, and others will be on hand to celebrate the new stamp!

11th Annual Yosemite Valley Apple Picking All visitors, employees, and
residents are invited to pick apples to help keep bears wild! DNC will again provide their famous Bear Scat Muffins free to hardworking volunteers. Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at Curry Village Apple Orchard from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and Lamon's (Valley Stables) Apple Orchard from 2:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. These ripe apples attract bears to developed areas and alter their natural diets. By removing the apples, bears will return to natural food sources found throughout the park and not become exposed to humans and their food. Parking will not be allowed in the Curry Village Orchard Lot from Wednesday, August 13th at 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Apples not taken home by employees and visitors will be donated to the Hornitos Catahoula Ranch.

WEEKLY BEAR ACTIVITY SUMMAR:
Yosemite Valley
Bear activity has been fairly high this week. Campground incidents picked up this week with bears getting substantial food from campers who leave food out or unattended or do not remember to close their locker properly. Parking lot incidents have been common this week as well. Most of the vehicles that have been broken into this week have had food inside.
Remember that food debris or trash, gum and air freshener are all examples of attractants that may draw a bear to break into your vehicle.

Backcountry: Glen Aulin and Little Yosemite Valley remain the two backcountry hot spots for bear activity. Please use a canister when backpacking and remember that all food and toiletries for all of the days of your trip must fit into your canister starting on day one of your trip.

White Wolf and Tuolumne: There was one car break-in and two campground incidents this week in White Wolf. Tuolumne Meadows has up to three bears active this week. Most sightings seem to be coming from the campground.

Yosemite National Park Remains Fully Open During Telegraph Fire

Roads and facilities in Yosemite National Park remain open with limited impacts in Yosemite Valley due to the Telegraph Fire burning in Midpines, CA.

The fire, now burning about 16,000 acres in Mariposa County, required PG&E to turn off power lines that feed Yosemite Valley and the local community of El Portal. Generators in Yosemite Valley are keeping visitor services such as the Valley Visitor Center, lodging, restaurants, and stores open. The power outage has had no impact on services and facilities in Tuolumne Meadows, Wawona, White Wolf, and other park destinations. All roads into the park remain clear and open.

Visitors should expect some reduction in visibility and localized smoke in areas throughout Yosemite National Park. Visitors with respiratory conditions should avoid smoky areas and vigorous activity where heavy smoke is present.

For more information about the Telegraph Fire, visit www.fire.ca.gov or call 209/966-4784 or 209/966-4785

Yosemite National Park Invites Public To Open House July 30, 2008 CANCELLED

The Yosemite Institute and Yosemite National Park will host 18 high school students from across the United States to initiate the Yosemite Institute’s Summer Research course.
The students will participate in ongoing research projects dealing with the park’s ecology and management. They will then go on an 8 day backpacking trip to further their studies and record their findings in a scientific journal.

"We are very excited about this unique and innovative partnership. This will give students experience in both field research and backpacking through Yosemite National Park," said Dr. Adam Burns, Field Science Project Manager for the Yosemite Institute.

Students that complete the course are given college credit from Columbia College, in Sonora, California. The perfect antidote to nature deficit disorder, this is student-centered, inquiry-based learning at its most adventurous. They explore beyond the basic natural history of the area learn field research skills that can be transferred to high school, college and beyond.

WEEKLY BEAR ACTIVITY SUMMARY

Yosemite Valley

Parking lot incidents went down this week with only two cars being broken into by bears. Campground activity seemed to pick up a bit, however. The Pines Campgrounds seemed to be a hot spot this week for numerous bears. As apples ripen, more bears may be coming in from areas outside of the Valley for the extra food source.

This is a particularly important time to keep your food stored properly 24 hours a day so that bears that are not normally in the Valley do not become accustomed to human food.

Backcountry

Bear activity in Glen Aulin has continued this week. Most incidents in the backcountry occurred at Glen Aulin. There has been a bear in the Little Yosemite Valley area as well.

WEEKLY BEAR ACTIVITY SUMMARY

Yosemite Valley
Early this week 11 vehicles were broken into by bears mostly in the Curry Village parking lots. There were only two incidents in the Pines campgrounds this week although bears have been observed most nights wandering through the campgrounds. Housekeeping Camp and Curry Village both had incidents this week, mostly bears getting food from food storage lockers that are left unsecure. A bear entered three homes in the upper NPS housing area last week. Bears easily learn how to get into houses when people leave their windows open while they are away at work or on vacation. Often these bears will become bold as they learn that food is available inside of homes. If you live in or near Yosemite, please help to prevent this by closing your windows when you are not home, and keeping windows near your kitchen or in unoccupied rooms closed when you are not awake. Numerous dumpsters were found unclipped this week. Bears are able to “mail” themselves into unclipped dumpsters, then become trapped inside. If the bear isn’t discovered before the garbage truck arrives, the bear can be killed by compaction. Please stop and secure any dumpsters, including the recycling dumpsters, you see unclipped – it could save a bear’s life!

Backcountry: Bear activity has picked up in Glen Aulin this week with 2 more reported bear incidents. The bear seems to be in the area very regularly. If you are going backpacking please remember to keep track of your food and keep it latched in your bear canister or in a food storage locker where provided. Bears are out during the day and night. Don’t forget about proper food storage during daylight hours! Source: NPS

Granite Frontiers
The Yosemite Climbing Association is hosting its second exhibit in the
valley museum. Over the last six months we have been working very hard in conjunction with Park Service to put together this show, which focuses on the last 140 years of Yosemite's climbing history. Through much support from The Yosemite Fund and Royal Robbins, Inc. we have been able to achieve success in putting this project together. It's been a long road with many bumps and detours but we've come out with much to show for it and we hope you can all share this with us. So, please come ready to learn learn a little history and share in the celebration! The exhibit is open 10-Noon and 1-4 from June 7th - October 27th in the Yosemite Valley Museum Gallery

Tuesday 6-10-08

Fire Update: Yosemite fire staff burned approximately 36 acres adjacent to
Foresta between June 5 and June 8, 2008. Changing weather conditions and heavy fuels close to the community limited progress over the weekend. However, fire managers hope to continue the burn this week, conditions permitting. Smoke was also observed near the Alder Creek Trail from the Wawona NW Prescribed Burn. This prescribed burn was completed in April, but some logs continue to smolder in the interior of the burn. Fire staff are continuing to monitor the area Friday.

Two bears were hit by vehicles this week, one died from its injuries. Please obey speed limits and be aware of wildlife on the sides of the roads when driving in Yosemite. The Pines campgrounds and concession areas, such as Housekeeping and Curry Village, had an increase in bear activity this week. A sow has been taking her cubs into developed areas and getting food out of lockers that are not properly latched. If you are planning on camping in Yosemite, make sure you know how your locker operates and latch it properly every time you open and close it.

Tioga Road to Open in Yosemite National Park Visitors urged to take
safety precautions for upcoming Memorial Day Weekend Yosemite National Park Superintendent Mike Tollefson announced today that the Tioga Road will open for the season on Wednesday, May 21 at 8:00 a.m. for all vehicle traffic. The Tioga Road, bounded on both sides by State Highway 120, is the popular east-west crossing of the Sierra Nevada. There will be no commercial services available along the road. Additionally, the Tuolumne Meadows Campground, other campgrounds along the corridor, and the Visitor Center will not be open. However, there will be restrooms available on the road. All visitor services, including the campgrounds, store, gas station, etc. will open over the next several weeks.

Visitors who are planning to visit Yosemite National Park over the
upcoming Memorial Day Weekend are urged to take extra safety precautions, especially along the Merced River. With the current warm weather and accelerated snowmelt, the river is running fast and cold. People should take extreme caution along the river and watch children at all times. The park is expecting a very busy weekend. People should plan on arriving in the park as early in the day as possible. People visiting Yosemite Valley are urged to take the free Yosemite Shuttle Bus to explore the sites and hike on the trails. If people can not arrive early, they should wait until late afternoon to enter the park as park entrances can become congested, especially mid-day.

There are a limited number of first-come, first-served campsites available in the park. However, those are expected to fill up as the weekend approaches. There are many opportunities for hiking and overnight accommodations in the gateway communities surrounding Yosemite National Park.

Finally, the cables on Half Dome are up for the season. The cables allow visitors an opportunity to climb to the top of Half Dome and view the park from an elevation of 8,842 feet above sea level.

National Be Bear Aware and Wildlife Stewardship Month: Red Bear Dead Bear:
Did you notice the Red Bear Dead Bear signs on your way to work this morning? These signs have been placed where bears have been killed by motor vehicles in past years. An average of 15 bears are hit by vehicles each year in the park and several are killed on impact. While most bears are able to run off the road, it’s unknown how many die later from their injuries. The Red Bear Dead Bear signs are a reminder for motorists to slow down, obey the posted speed limits, and to be aware of wildlife along roadsides.
Did you know? Black bears have excellent navigation skills and have been known to return over 150 miles to their home range after being relocated.

POSTPONED: Merced River Plan - May 10, 2008 - Public Planning Workshop

To all parties interested in the Merced River Comprehensive Management Plan:

The new Merced River Plan public planning workshop scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm in Yosemite Valley, has been POSTPONED. Park management continues to consult with the National Park Service Pacific West Regional Director, Interior Department attorneys, and the Department of Justice on the implications of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on the 2005 Revised Merced River Plan. In order to honor the time, energy, and costs borne by participants, park management wants to have clear direction on the scope, process, and substance of the next version of the plan before convening another workshop. The park is working hard to stay on schedule and will have more information to the public soon. Please check our web site for updates: http://www.nps.gov/yose/parkmgmt/
newmrp.htm

Information will be distributed once a new date for the next public planning workshop has been determined. Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Elexis Mayer, Project Manager by phone at 209-379-1377, or by email at elexis_mayer@nps.gov, or Linda Dahl, Yosemite National Park Chief of Planning via email at linda_dahl@nps.gov.

As a result of the April 21 fire that destroyed the El Portal Market,
Yosemite National Park will be moving the store operation to the El Portal Motor Inn (currently known as the Special Park Uses Office) for the duration of the concessionaire’s six year contract. The Park plans to have the building ready to open as a store in nine months time.
Yosemite National Park Superintendent Michael Tollefson announced today that the park is starting the process to put a temporary office structure at the site of former El Portal Market, pending the outcome of environmental compliance analysis and after the site is cleared of any hazardous materials. The temporary office structure is necessary because a number of park staff are being displaced by the move of the store function into the Special Park Uses Office building. The former El Portal Market site, at the corner of 140 and El Portal Road, is a good choice for a temporary office structure because it already has water lines, electric service, a lift station already in place, sufficient parking, is not in a residential area, and has high visibility to the public.
Park staff who currently work in the Special Park Uses Office will be moved into various office locations throughout the park at the end of next week. There is no date yet estimated for the completion of the temporary office building in El Portal.

TUOLUMNE MEADOWS WINTER CONDITIONS UPDATE February 6, 2008

February 1 snow survey results - A series of storms at the end of the month made travel difficult, and many snow courses were not surveyed until well into February. Results show the Tuolumne drainage at 133% of average and the Merced drainage at 125% of average. A true February 1 average would be a little lower, however, as about half the courses were measured after the big storm of February 3. Many of the storms this year have been cold, and this is reflected in the data-most of the lower elevation courses in the Tuolumne drainage are already well above 100% of their April 1 average. The snowiest course this month was Wilma Lake, with 9 1/2 feet of snow and 36" of water.

Continuing rockfall activity at Middle Brother:
Due to continuing rockfalls from Middle Brother, Northside Drive between Camp 4 and El Capitan crossover in Yosemite Valley remains closed. Please be aware that this closure includes both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The area was closed following a rockfall on December 18, 2007 that sent one large boulder and several smaller rock fragments onto the road. Since that time, there have been at least four additional rockfalls from Middle Brother, with the most recent event occurring at 10:16 am on January 8. This most recent rockfall sent additional rock debris onto the road. The rockfalls are originating from an area that was last active in March 2000. Winter storm activity has complicated hazard assessment, but the park is closely monitoring rockfall activity.
