Environmental document released for 30-day comment period

July 6, 2021 - BARSTOW, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management, Barstow Field Office, is seeking public input on the environmental analysis for proposed remediation actions at the Calico Early Man Site located 15 miles northeast of Barstow, California within San Bernardino County.

The BLM proposes to remediate the remnant archaeological excavation and study features of the site as they pose a significant threat to on-site public safety. The method of remediation (e.g., installation of cupolas/air gates, backfilling, removal, etc.) for each of the features depends on both the historic significance of that feature and its potential threat to human health and safety. Once the public safety issues are remediated, the site would be re-opened to the public for self guided tours; the location has been closed since 2017.

Release of the environmental assessment begins a 30-day comment period. Substantive comments must be received by August 2, 2021. Members of the public may submit comments via ePlanning at https://go.usa.gov/x6sSY. or by fax at 760-252-6098 or by mail at Barstow Field Office, 2601 Barstow Road, Barstow, CA 92311.
