Police Investigate Shooting at Central Library; Two Shot, One Dead
May 24, 2023 - San Diego Police Department officials report that on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at approximately 12:17 p.m., the San Diego Police Communications Center 
received a call of gunshots at the Central Library at 330 Park Boulevard in the East Village neighborhood of San Diego. Officers from Central Division responded and located two males suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the plaza area in front of the library. Officers began rendering aid to the victims. Paramedics arrived and transported one of the males to a local hospital. The other male was unfortunately pronounced deceased at the scene.
The San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit was called to the scene to investigate. Based on preliminary information gathered, it appears there was some sort of interaction or altercation at the entrance to the library between the suspect and the victims. Other people were also in the area. During this time, the suspect produced a handgun and fired at the victims, striking them. Detectives are working to gather more information, collecting evidence, including surveillance video and interviewing witnesses.
The first victim is described as a 20-year-old Black male. He has been preliminarily identified, but his name will not be released at this time. He was pronounced deceased at the scene from at least one gunshot wound to the torso.
The second victim is described as a 24-year-old Black male. He remains at the hospital in treatment for at least one gunshot wound to the lower part of his body. He is expected to survive his injuries. His name is not being released at this time.
There is limited information on the suspect to release at this time. He is described as a Black male wearing dark clothing. He fled the scene on foot following the shooting.
