UPDATE: SWAT Standoff - Lemon Grove

May 26, 2023 - San Diego County Sheriff Department officials report that a Lemon Grove man suspected of firing a weapon at his neighbors' san diego county sheriff department logohomes and sparking a nearly seven-hour long SWAT standoff has been taken into custody.

Brandon Andrade (DOB 02/28/1995) was arrested just before 3:00 p.m. after deputies with the Sheriff's Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT) used a chemical agent at his home in the 8100 block of Longdale Drive. Andrade came out with his hands up and surrendered peacefully.

Andrade will undergo a mental health evaluation before he is booked into the San Diego Central Jail on three counts of attempted murder.

All road closures related to the SWAT standoff will be lifted by 4:00 p.m. People living in the nine homes that were evacuated will also be allowed back home shortly.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department and Lemon Grove Sheriff's Substation would like to thank the public and the media for their assistance and cooperation. We would also like to thank the Sheriff's Crisis Negotiation Team, Sheriff's Chaplains, and the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) for helping us reach a peaceful resolution in this incident.

(Original Release) SWAT Standoff - Lemon Grove

May 26, 2023 - San Diego County Sheriff Department officials report that the San Diego County Sheriff's Department is working to peacefully resolve a SWAT standoff in Lemon Grove.

This all started just before 8:00 a.m. when deputies with the Lemon Grove Sheriff's Substation received 9-1-1 calls about a shooting in the 8100 block of Longdale Drive. Callers told dispatchers a man was shooting at his neighbors' homes.

Deputies quickly arrived on scene and found a neighbor who had been injured by bullet fragments. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

The mother of the suspect was able to get out of her home safely. No one else is inside the home. No one else was hurt from the shooting.

As a precaution, deputies evacuated eight homes in the neighborhood. Lemon Grove Early Childhood Education Center was also placed on lockdown as a precaution.

The suspect has barricaded himself inside his home and is refusing to come out.

Skyline Drive between Longdale Drive and Palm Street is closed as deputies respond to this incident. You will see and hear Sheriff's ASTREA (helicopter) overhead.

We also have deputies with the Sheriff's Crisis Negotiation Team and Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT) at the scene. Also responding is a Sheriff's Chaplain, as well as the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT).

We are in communication with the suspect and working to convince him to surrender peacefully. We are told by family members that he might have other firearms inside the home. His mother also says the suspect has mental health needs.

If the suspect is watching the news or reading this release, we ask that you work with and trust the person you are talking to on the phone. They are trying to help you. They want to get you to a safe place.

A message for the public: if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, help is always available by calling 9-8-8.
