June 1, 2023 - San Diego Police Department officials report that dozens of illegal guns are off San Diego streets following a three-month joint operation. The “Privately Made Firearm Crime Reduction Project” resulted in the seizure of 165 guns – 82 of which were so-called “ghost guns” or un-serialized firearms. Additionally, 33 people were prosecuted on gun, drugs, and violent crimes charges.
San Diego PD Chief David Nisleit, along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) announced the results of the operation today. ATF and SDPD used multiple investigative techniques, including undercover operations, surveillance, scouring social media accounts, and using confidential informants, and undercover federal agents. In addition to the firearms, investigators also recovered nearly 66 pounds of methamphetamine, fentanyl, fentanyl pills, and cocaine.
