Death Investigation of a Minor 

November 7, 2023 - Alturas, CA – Modoc County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Friday, November 3, 2023, at approximately 6:18 P.M., deputies were dispatched to 418 Washington Street, in Cedarville, California for a dropped 9-1-1 call. As deputies were responding, information was provided through our dispatch center, that Surprise Valley Hospital had a 3-year-old male brought into their facility with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Deputies responded to the hospital where they discovered the 3-year-old was deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. The victim's father transported the victim to the hospital from the residence where the 9-1-1 call originated.

This case is under investigation, and investigators are working to try and determine how the firearm got discharged. There will be no further information provided at this time.
