May 13, 2024 - BAKERSFIELD – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials today announced the apprehension of a person who walked away from cdcr 511 Travis Johnny BV7665the Male Community Reentry Program (MCRP) in Kern County on Friday, May 10, 2024.

Johnny Travis, aged 51, was apprehended in Bakersfield at approximately 6:30 p.m. by CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety after he removed his GPS device. Travis will be transported to North Kern State Prison where he will be returned to CDCR custody. His case will be referred to the Kern County District Attorney for possible escape charges.

Travis was received from Kern County on Aug. 14, 2023. He was sentenced to two years for vandalism. Additionally, he received 1 year and 4 months for second-degree burglary, to be served concurrently to his first offense. He has been housed at MCRP Kern County since Feb. 22, 2024.

The MCRP allows eligible offenders committed to state prison to serve the end of their sentences in the re-entry center and provides them the programs and tools necessary to transition from custody to the community. It is a voluntary program for male offenders who have two years of less left to serve. The program links offenders to a range of community-based rehabilitative services that assist with substance use disorders, mental health care, medical care, employment, education, housing, family reunification and social support.

Since 1977, 99 percent of all people who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended.
