Modoc County Search & Rescue 

June 25, 2024 – Alturas, CA – Modoc County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Modoc County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to Pine Creek Reservoir for a 19-year-old male, who had reportedly jumped from a cliff into the canyon below. Deputies arrived on scene at approximately 4:41 a.m. and began searching for the Alturas man.

Alturas Rural Fire Department and Cal Fire also assisted in the search. With assistance from witnesses, searchers were able to narrow down the exact location he had jumped from. It was also reported to deputies that he had made statements of harming himself prior to jumping.

At approximately 7:05 a.m. Cal Fire firefighters located the man at the bottom of the canyon with life-threatening injuries. A Cal Fire helicopter was used to hoist the man from the bottom of the canyon to an awaiting ambulance. He was then transferred to an air ambulance and transported from the scene to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Hunter is currently in critical condition.
