Sale of Psilocybin
August 29, 2024 – Ventura County Sheriff's Office officials report that in the month of July, the
Thousand Oaks Directed Enforcement Unit (DEU) received a tip from a concerned Thousand Oaks resident about psilocybin mushrooms being sold to minors and other community members. The narcotic transactions were reportedly organized through social media accounts.
DEU detectives initiated an investigation into the online sales of psilocybin mushrooms. Through various law enforcement techniques, detectives identified Antony Conteras as the individual responsible for selling and delivering psilocybin mushrooms within Thousand Oaks. Conteras was found to be selling and delivering Polkadot shroom chocolate bars containing psilocybin mushrooms. He was subsequently arrested for possession of controlled substances and the transportation for sale of controlled substances. Contreras was booked at the Pretrial Detention Facility in Ventura, California.
Psilocybin mushrooms are classified as a Schedule I Controlled Substance under the Controlled Substances Act. Schedule I Controlled Substances, which include heroin and LSD, are characterized by a high potential for abuse and lack of legitimate medical use in the United States. The psychological effects of psilocybin can include hallucinations, an inability to distinguish fantasy from reality, and in some cases, panic reactions or psychosis, particularly with large doses.
