Update - SDPD OIS – 4700 Block of Bermuda Avenue, in San Diego 

June 7, 2025 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials report that the Homicide Unit responded to an officer involved shooting san diego county sheriff department logothat occurred in the morning of May 31, 2025, on the 4700 block of Bermuda Avenue, in the community of Ocean Beach, in the city of San Diego.

At approximately 9:15 a.m., San Diego Police Officers were dispatched to check the welfare of a male adult standing in the middle of the street blocking traffic on the 4400 block of Coronado Avenue, in the city of San Diego.  The male was heard making suicidal statements.  A San Diego Police Officer arrived, and the officer called for additional units to assist.  

The male entered a small black sedan, and a pursuit ensued through surface streets in Ocean Beach. The vehicle pursuit ended at the intersection of Ebers Street and Bermuda Avenue after the black sedan collided with a black Jeep driving in the intersection.

The male got out of his vehicle and made suicidal statements.  Less lethal options were utilized to deescalate the situation. The male while armed with a knife advanced on officers. One San Diego Police Officer shot multiple rounds at the suspect, striking him.

Officers immediately began lifesaving measures and called for paramedics.   Paramedics arrived and transported the subject to a local hospital but unfortunately, the subject succumbed to his injuries.

No San Diego Police Officers suffered any injuries due to this incident.  The driver of the Jeep complained of pain but declined to be transported to seek medical treatment.

The decedent was identified as 32-year-old, Jacob Lyle Epple.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been identified as Yosgart Miranda. Officer Miranda has been with the San Diego Police Department for approximately two years and is currently assigned to patrol at the Western Division.

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved-shooting investigation.  At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation and review process for officer-involved shootings are extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for the officers' actions. The San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the officer's discharge of the firearm.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney’s Office will also be monitoring the investigation.
