Firearms and Narcotics Arrest in Encinitas 

May 28, 2026 – San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Wednesday, May 27, a Sheriff's Deputy from the North Coastal Station attempted to contact Ryan Vanvelzer, a 46-year-old male, who was asleep in the driver seat of his vehicle, in violation of Encinitas municipal code 9.01.025. As the deputy approached, Vanvelzer started his vehicle and drove away. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the 600 block of La Costa Avenue.

After an initial investigation, Vanvelzer was detained, and a search of the vehicle was conducted. Inside the vehicle, deputies located an unserialized loaded firearm. Vanvelzer was also found to be in possession of an illegal substance that presumptively tested positive for fentanyl.

Vanvelzer was arrested and later booked into the Vista Detention Facility for multiple firearms and drug-related offenses. The Sheriff's Office is committed to the safety of the public.
