June 14, 2026 – YUBA CITY, CA – Yuba City Police Department officials report that they are
requesting assistance as it investigates a series of theft and vandalism incidents that caused extensive damage to the Sutter County Library located at 750 Forbes Avenue in Yuba City.
On May 19, 2026, officers responded to the library after staff discovered that an unknown suspect(s) had cut through a secured perimeter fence and damaged an exterior air conditioning unit. Initial estimates indicated approximately $8,000 in damage.
On May 21, 2026, library staff discovered additional and significantly more extensive damage to the facility's HVAC system. Further inspection revealed that multiple air conditioning units had been dismantled and numerous components were missing. According to library officials, five HVAC units sustained catastrophic damage, with as much as 90 percent of some units reportedly removed.
Current estimates indicate the combined theft, damage, and repair costs may exceed $100,000, although the total loss remains under evaluation.
During the investigation, officers recovered several items believed to have been used during the commission of the crime, including cutting tools and other property located near the damaged equipment. These items were collected as evidence and are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Based on the evidence collected, investigators believe the suspect (s) gained access to the secured HVAC enclosure by cutting through a fence of the property. The investigation indicates that components from the HVAC units were removed; however, the circumstances surrounding the incidents remain under investigation.
The crimes have significantly impacted critical infrastructure serving the Sutter County Library and have resulted in substantial financial costs associated with repair and replacement of the damaged equipment.
