Update - SDPD OIS – 2700 block of Nipoma Street, in San Diego 

September 5, 2026 – San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials report that Homicide Unit responded to an officer-involved shooting that occurred on the evening of August 25, 2026, in the 2700 block of Nipoma Street in the City of San Diego.

At approximately 4:40 p.m., San Diego Police Department officers were dispatched to a check-the-welfare call that was later updated to a residential burglary in progress. Upon arrival, officers contacted the homeowner, who reported that firearms were inside the residence and that no one had permission to be inside. Due to the potential dangers of the situation, the San Diego Police Department SWAT Team responded and employed tactical methods to safely resolve the incident.

While officers were attempting to make contact, multiple gunshots were heard coming from inside the residence. At approximately 9:20 p.m., an adult male holding a firearm exited through the front door. An officer-involved shooting occurred, and the male was struck. Paramedics responded, and the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 9:40 p.m. A firearm was located next to the decedent and was collected as evidence.

No San Diego Police Department officers were injured during the incident.

The decedent has been identified as 24-year-old Erik Simon Sanders, a resident of Alpine. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to his family and all those affected by his passing.

The officers who discharged their weapons have been identified as Officer Christopher Lingenhol, Officer David Speck, and Officer Jose Velasquez.

Officer Lingenhol has been with the San Diego Police Department for 12 years and is assigned to patrol at the Mid-City Division. Officer Speck has been with the San Diego Police Department for 30 years and is assigned to Special Operations, SWAT. Officer Velasquez has been with the San Diego Police Department for nine years and is assigned to patrol at the Central Division. Officers Lingenhol and Velasquez are also members of the SDPD SWAT Primary Response Team.

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit responded and is conducting the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. At this stage, the motivation and circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation. Detectives are collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing all aspects of the event.

The investigative and review process for officer-involved shootings is comprehensive. Once the Homicide Unit concludes its investigation, the case will be submitted to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether the involved officers bear any criminal liability. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the officers’ discharge of their firearm.
