September 7, 2026 – Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced that the District Attorney’s Office is aware of the significant media attention surrounding the tragic death of an infant found deceased on the side of the road on August 1, 2026, as well as the circumstances involving the infant’s 14-year-old mother and her biological father, who is also the infant’s father. Given the public interest and the amount of information circulating about this case, the District Attorney’s Office is providing the following clarification regarding the current status of the investigation.

The District Attorney’s Office has not received a filing request for criminal charges against the 14-year-old Jane Doe, nor has our office received any investigative reports from law enforcement. As a result, our office has not made any charging decision regarding the 14-year-old Jane Doe.

Law enforcement obtained a Ramey warrant, which is a warrant issued by a judge based upon a finding of probable cause. A Ramey warrant is obtained through the court and is not reviewed or approved in advance by the District Attorney’s Office. The decision to seek a Ramey warrant is made by law enforcement. Ultimately, only the District Attorney’s Office is responsible for determining whether criminal charges will be filed.

Importantly, the District Attorney’s Office has filed criminal charges against the 14-year-old’s biological father, Sergio Galvez Perez, for the heinous crime of sexually assaulting his own child. The charge of child molestation is a serious and violent felony under California law, constitutes a strike under California’s Three Strikes law, and requires sex offender registration upon conviction. We are requesting a warrant be issued for his arrest, and we call on him to turn himself in and face the charges against him.

We recognize that the 14-year-old is a victim of her father’s abuse. No child should ever have to endure such horrific circumstances. Our office works with victims of abuse every day and understands that children who have experienced abuse can face extraordinary barriers to safety and may be unable to seek help on their own, particularly when they are under the control or influence of an abuser. The responsibility for getting a child to safety does not rest on the child. Our priority is to ensure that this young girl is safe and has access to the support and services she needs. If she is located, our District Attorney victim advocates and partner agencies are ready to assist her, connect her with resources, and help ensure that she has the support she needs. Whether she is currently able to seek assistance or not, we want her to know that help is available and that our office and our community partners are prepared to support her when she is able to access those services.

The District Attorney’s Office is also reviewing potential charges involving the 14-year-old’s mother. Those potential charges are unrelated to the death of the infant and unrelated to the sexual assault allegedly committed by Sergio Galvez Perez. Because the investigation remains ongoing, we cannot comment further on those potential charges at this time.

We understand that there are many questions surrounding this heartbreaking case. Investigations develop as additional evidence is gathered, and charging decisions can change as new information becomes available. The District Attorney’s Office will carefully review any evidence provided to us, and will make charging decisions based on the facts and the law. Our office remains committed to pursuing justice, holding offenders accountable, and protecting the rights and dignity of victims, especially children who have experienced abuse.
