Officer-Involved Shooting in Hollenbeck Division 

**The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed**

September 9, 2026 – Los Angeles, CA – Los Angeles Police Department officials report that on September 7, 2026, at approximately 10:02 a.m., Hollenbeck Patrol Division uniformed police officers responded to a radio call for a male with mental illness, armed with a metal pipe at the 600 block of Gillette Street.

Upon arrival, the officers were met by a family member of the suspect outside of the suspect’s residence. The family member directed the officers to the suspect, later identified as Zimran Canas, who exited a front gate armed with an approximate 8-foot pole with an approximate 12-inch serrated blade attached to the end. The officers gave verbal commands for Canas to drop the weapon, but he did not comply.

Canas advanced toward one of the officers holding the weapon with the blade pointed toward the officer, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting. Canas collapsed onto the ground and was taken into custody. The officers rendered medical aid until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived at scene and transported Canas to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A metal pipe and the pole with a serrated blade were recovered at the scene and booked as evidence. No community members or officers were injured during this incident. Force Investigation Division (FID) personnel responded to the scene and are conducting the investigation.
