Homicide on Howe Avenue
September 10, 2026 – Sacramento County Sheriff's Office officials report that just before 3:00 P.M. on Tuesday, 
September 8, 2026, Sheriff’s North Patrol Deputies responded near the Panera on Howe Avenue after several witnesses reported a shooting. Deputies arrived on scene and located a 38-year-old female victim, who was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
After learning of the suspect’s vehicle description from witnesses on scene, the vehicle was entered into the FLOCK system. Almost instantly, Deputies learned of its last location through the FLOCK system, and Deputies assigned to Regional Transit located it near Highway 50 and Howe Avenue just minutes later. As they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver immediately slammed on his brakes, and the vehicle came to a stop. Deputies attempted to call out the driver for some time, but ultimately discovered that the driver, a 22-year-old male identified as Rohit Rohit (pictured), was deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
As Homicide Detectives conducted their investigation, they learned Rohit had been harassing and stalking the victim since at least January, when she discovered an Apple AirTag under the hood of her vehicle. Rohit’s actions had grown increasingly alarming when, in one incident, he deflated the air in the victim’s vehicle and followed her to work so he could offer her assistance. In a separate incident, he obtained a copy of the victim’s apartment key, entered her residence while she was sleeping, and claimed the following morning that he had entered because he was concerned something had happened to her when she did not answer. Despite the bizarre behavior, the victim initially declined to pursue charges or obtain a restraining order. Deputies and Detectives remained concerned for her safety and remained in contact with the victim for the next few months. In May, Deputies spoke to the victim and implored her again to obtain a restraining order, which she finally did. On July 29, Deputies took a report from the victim for a restraining order violation when she reported that Rohit dropped off random grocery items at her front door.
While the immediate events leading up to the murder on Tuesday are still being investigated, Detectives learned that Rohit arrived at the shopping center on Howe Avenue in his vehicle just before 3:00 P.M. A short time later, the victim was dropped off at her vehicle, which was already parked at the same location. Rohit approached the victim and began to accost her. As the victim attempted to run away, Rohit chased her down, pulled out a firearm, and shot her multiple times. The victim fell to the ground; Rohit then walked over her lying body and shot her in the head at close range.
