SST LTRJune 5, 2018 - Hello, I was very surprised to read Jay Johnson's recent letter about the Mariposa biomass energy plant (that's been "APPEALED" by a local nearby homeowner, Appeal Hearing on July 10 (Tuesday), 2:00 p.m. at the Mariposa Government Center).  Johnson claims that the impact of the biomass plant will be "cleaner air"!

Even a cursory check of the internet reveals the following articles:

"Air Pollution from Biomass Energy:  Despite the frequent depiction of biomass as "clean" energy, data from air permit applications and real smokestack tests demonstrate quite clearly that biomass is a heavily polluting technology."

"Green" Biomass Isn't Always so Clean!"

"EPA Loopholes Allow Biomass to Emit More Toxic Air Pollution".

"Biomass Plants take Hit for Pollution"

"Report finds rapidly growing "green" energy industry releases dangerous air pollution."

California biomass plants have been heavily fined for air pollution.  The EPA apparently doesn't hold biomass to the same pollution standards as other energy producers, so they take advantage of that.  But ALL combustion-type energy production pollutes, and when near homes and businesses (as in Mariposa), it's very harmful.  Unfortunately, the plants must be near a PG&E facility, so locations are limited.  Please attend the APPEAL HEARING on July 10, and help keep our air clean and breathable!

Thanks,
Evie Wilson
