A hero (masculine) or heroine (feminine) is a person who, in the face of danger, combats adversity through impressive feats of ingenuity, bravery or strength, often sacrificing his or her own personal concerns for some greater good. Putting her life at risk in fighting fire and then putting her career, her standing among other park officials, and her public standing at risk to come forward -- in front of a Congressional hearing no less -- to speak out against the inequality, sexual oppression and sexual harassment she experienced over many years at varying levels in the National Park Service makes Kelly Martin a true heroine.
