July 24, 2018 - Whether you want to learn basic computer programming or how to self-publish an ebook, create colorful jewelry or shake up a batch of butter with your kids, you can do it all in a Mariposa Library Green S.T.E.A.M. Makerspace program. It’s free… it’s fun… and it’s refreshingly cool.
Programs take place in the Library Community Room (except where noted). Space is limited, and registration is required. Register at the Library, call (209) 966-2140 or email karen.dusek@mariposalibrary.org. Children 10 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
This Saturday, July 28 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon, local college student Shaun Flanagan will teach basic computer programming using Arduino kits and Chromebooks. Age 12 and older are welcome. No experience is necessary. All materials are provided.
If you’ve dreamed of having your writing published, the Library offers an option through links to Biblioboard and Pressbooks, two free sites that allow you to compose, edit and publish your work. Come to a free workshop from 3:00 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. on Thursday, August 2 to learn how to access and use these resources to make your dream a reality.
Local artisan Aubrey Simpson will return on Saturday, August 4 from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. with a Makerspace favorite—dichroic glass jewelry. Take home a stunning piece of wearable art you made yourself from recycled bits of glass fired in a kiln.
Learn the science behind butter making and popcorn by making (and eating) this popular snack at the El Portal Library at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, August 9. A real treat for all ages!
Dress up those plain plastic light switch plates with ceramic mosaics or make a set of coasters from discarded tiles on Saturday, August 11 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon. Wear old clothes—this can get messy.
What makes our fingerprints unique? How are they used to solve crimes? “Fun with Fingerprints” offers some hands-on exploration into the art and science of fingerprints on Thursday, August 16 from 3:00 P.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Are you planning a party or want to brighten up a kids’ room? Paper flowers are an artsy (and inexpensive) option. Learn how to make colorful giant carnations from tissue paper and smaller, more subtle flowers from coffee filters in a workshop taught by Nancy Francis on Saturday, August 25. All ages are welcome.
The final workshop in August, on Thursday, August 30, will have you in stitches. Learn to crochet by making an afghan square to donate to Warm Up America, a non-profit foundation that donates handmade blankets to hospitals, shelters, nursing homes and other facilities. All levels of expertise are welcome. Materials and supplies are provided or bring your own if you like.
The Green S.T.E.A.M. Makerspace program was made possible through a 2016 Library Services and Technology Services Act (LSTA) grant administered by the California State Library. The program is also supported by funding from STI and Mariposa Friends of the Library and donations of supplies and materials from Mariposa County Landfill and Recycling and local residents.
