August 27, 2018 - Sierra Foothill Charter School's full and rich music program just grew even more. Teacher Stephanie Evans had created a project called, “Keyboards for Kids,” on behalf of Music Instructor Gail Vanderslik on the educational crowd funding site, DonorsChoose. Evans recently found out the project has been fully funded. This means the school will be able to purchase eight new keyboards, including stands, stools, and headphones, for students to use.
“We have four mini keyboards for students to use,” said Evans. “They are great for younger and beginner students, but as the students progress, they need keyboards that allow them to play more complicated pieces that transfer easily to the piano. Also, having additional keyboards allows us to invite more students to participate in the group lessons.”
“I want to thank Stephanie for creating the project,” said Music Instructor Gail Vanderslik. “And all the donors for their generosity. Playing the piano is a popular goal of SFCS students. Providing standard-size keyboards at our school will allow more students to have access to this type of music instruction.”
Music not only brings joy. Research shows that those who play an instrument use all aspects of their brains and can make more connections across disciplines.
“Learning how to play instruments such as keyboards will help our students in all areas of their education - and their lives,” said Vanderslik.
SFCS wishes to thank their very generous donors: Hornitos #98 Masonic Lodge, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Jill Harry, Carol Johnson, Doug Lopes, Karen BurkeHanner, Chris Swarth, Barbara Robinson, Christine and David Hunt from New Jersey, and two anonymous donors.
“We at SFCS could not be more thrilled with everyone's generosity and the gift of keyboards and music education that it brings,” said Principal/Superintendent Mindy Bolar.
