merced irrigation district logo“This was an exciting and fun weekend,” said MID Parks Director Brooke Gutierrez. “The weather couldn’t have been better and it was fantastic to see two of the top three prized-fish caught.”

In all, 50 fish were tagged for the annual fall derby. Tags 51, 52 and 53 were respectively set at $2,000, $1,000 and $500.

Daniel Green of Turlock reeled in tag 52 for $1,000. Jack Wilkerson of Atwater hauled in tag 53 for $500. Of the remaining tagged fish, numbers 54-100, the $3,258 pool was split by seven lucky winners: Daniel Canyon, Mike Post, Patrick Maloney, Joseph Candelaria, Chris Ray, Chad Anderson and Yer Vang.

They each will receive $465.43.

In all, some 382 participants were at Lake McSwain for the derby, held on Oct. 6 and 7.

Immediately prior to the derby, 2,000 pounds of trout were planted in Lake McSwain. That’s in addition to ongoing regular plants that have resumed since the end of the drought.

“The weather and turnout were great. Plenty of fish were caught and everyone is already talking about the 2019 Spring Derby,” said MID’s Gutierrez.
