October 15, 2018 - UCCE Mariposa will be offering a 2019 Master Gardener training class January through May 2019. Applications will be accepted through October and interviews will be held by appointment in November.  If accepted into the program, an enrollment fee will cover books and materials for the 18-week training course to be held Wednesdays at McCay Hall in Cathey’s Valley. Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Classes cover such topics as horticulture, soils, water, entomology, plant pathology, integrated pest management, sustainable landscaping, and plant propagation. Certification in the Master Gardener program is achieved after completion of training and passing a final exam.

Master Gardeners are members of the local community, trained by University of California and Cooperative Extension experts. In exchange for training, Master Gardeners spend time as volunteers, extending research-based horticultural information to the gardening community. They share a passion for horticulture, an eagerness to learn and a desire to serve their communities by supporting the outreach efforts of the University of California and its collaborative partners.

UC Master Gardeners of Mariposa County offer helpline services and free workshops to the public, conduct plant sales in both Mariposa and Coulterville, put on an annual garden tour, assist the county through our community garden program, and provide educational outreach at a multitude of local events.

The Master Gardener program seeks to improve and support a healthy community by training local volunteers to share their knowledge and encourage the effort to enhance local sustainable food systems and landscaping practices.

If you are enthusiastic, willing to learn, enjoy helping others, able to communicate with diverse groups of people, and have some gardening experience, you may qualify to be a certified Master Gardener volunteer.  Applications may be requested at the UCCE offices (5009 Fairgrounds Rd, Mariposa), on our website at http://cemariposa.ucanr.edu/Master_Gardener, or via email at smace@ucanr.eduThe deadline to apply is October 26, 2018.
