October 19, 2018 - More than 400,000 people around the world are expected to test their wits and writing stamina by penning 50,000 words in 30 days as part of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). The Mariposa Library is encouraging community members of all ages to be part of this extreme writing challenge by setting goals of 50,000 words for adults, 10,000 words for middle and high school students and 500 words for elementary school students.
A Brainstorm Bash kick-off workshop will be held in the Library meeting room on Saturday, October 27 at 10:30 a.m. to share information about NaNoWriMo and resources available to help participants meet their goals. A brainstorming session will follow.
Midway through the month, writers will be able to share their work and receive feedback during a second workshop, which will be held on Saturday, November 17 at 12:30 p.m.
A final TGIO (Thank God It’s Over) party celebrating the accomplishments of everyone who participated will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 1:00 p.m. Special awards will be given to those who accomplish their goals.
NaNoWriMo is a 501(c)(3) non-profit founded in 1998 whose mission is “to provide the structure, community and encouragement to help people find their voices, achieve creative goals and build new worlds—on and off the page.” More information can be found at nanowrimo.org.
Hundreds of NaNoWriMo drafts have been traditionally published. They include: Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants, Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, Hugh Howey’s Wool, Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl, Jason Hough’s The Darwin Elevator and Marissa Meyer’s Cinder.
