January 9, 2019 - Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today issued the following statement on President Trump’s tweet that he would deny FEMA money to wildfire victims in California:

“It’s absolutely shocking for President Trump to suggest he would deny disaster assistance to communities destroyed by wildfire. Attacking victims is yet another low for this president.

“The Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive in California’s history, was extinguished a month ago. It killed 86 people, destroyed 14,000 homes and burned 150,000 acres. It’s heartless for the president to blame California for this natural disaster while families are just beginning to rebuild.“It’s widely understood that the largest contributor to increased wildfires is climate change. This year’s National Climate Assessment found climate change has doubled the number of acres burned in the West during the last 30 years.

“If the president were serious about addressing wildfire, he would recommit the United States to reducing harmful emissions rather than attacking wildfire victims and referring to climate change as a hoax.

“The president’s empty threat is based on groundless complaints, and candidly isn’t worth the time of day. I’ll continue to push for additional tools to combat wildfire, as I did when I met with Secretary Perdue last month.

“President Trump could use a refresher that he’s president of the entire country. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, you’re the president, start acting like it.”
