A Bobcat Fight in Mariposa County

May 25, 2019 - SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Humane Society of the United States is applauding the passage of California Assembly Bill 1254, to create a moratorium on the trophy hunting of California’s iconic bobcats.

Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager-Dove, D-Los Angeles, introduced the bill, which passed on Thursday by a 54 to 21 vote, with five members not voting. 

Over the past 10 years, nearly 10,000 bobcats have been killed in California. A small number of trophy hunters are responsible for killing most of the bobcats who have been hunted in California. Samantha Hagio, wildlife protection director for the Humane Society of the United States, issued the following statement:

“The Humane Society of the United States is thankful to the California Assembly for passing AB 1254. No one is killing bobcats for food – they’re slaughtered for nothing more than a trophy by a tiny minority of the population. The vast majority of Californians are opposed to this practice, and we urge the Senate to heed the wishes of their constituents and put a stop to this cruel, outdated and unnecessary practice.”
