January 7, 2015 - On Tuesday, January 6, 2015 during the early afternoon hours Richard Emerick, 84, of Coarsegold was driving his 2009 Lexus ES350 in the Raley's parking lot while John Miller, 76, of Oakhurst was driving his 2005 Toyota Prius in the same parking lane ahead of Mr. Emerick.

For an unknown reason Mr. Emerick accelerated his vehicle directly towards Mr. Miller and collided with the Prius. After the collision Mr. Emerick put his Lexus in reverse, accelerated around the Prius and continued at a high rate of speed towards Highway 49. The Lexus then crossed the highway and collided with a dirt embankment. The collision with the embankment caused the Lexus to become airborne which then crashed into a brick wall that housed a trash dumpster. The Lexus while turning over collided with a Toyota pickup in the Jack in the Box Restaurant parking lot. The Lexus finally stopped on all four wheels in the parking lot south of the Jack in the Box Restaurant.

The CHP reports Mr. Emerick appeared to be undergoing a medical condition at the time of both collisions. He was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with minor injuries. No injuries were reported for Mr. Miller.

The investigation into the accidents is still ongoing.
