The Mariposa County Library is looking for people who would like to share their love of reading and make a difference in someone’s life by volunteering as tutors in the Read and Succeed adult literacy program in Mariposa, El Portal and North County.  Math tutors are also being sought.

Tutors must be 18 years old or older; be English speaking; have graduated from high school or earned a GED; and read at a 12th grade level or higher.

Tutors are trained to work with learners on a one-to-one basis. Learners work at their own pace to achieve goals they set for themselves. For example, if a learner wants to write a resume, pass the GED test, or get a driver’s license, instruction is directed toward achieving that goal.  All program materials are provided free of charge to learners. Hours are flexible to fit in with the tutors’ and learners’ individual schedules.

Prospective tutors must attend an hour-long orientation followed by a full-day training session. An orientation is scheduled for Thursday, March 5 at 10 a.m. at the Mariposa Library.  North County or El Portal residents who cannot attend the Mariposa orientation should call 209-966-2140 to schedule another time.  A training session will be held on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Merced Library. Carpooling may be available.

This program is provided in conjunction with the Merced Library Read and Succeed adult literacy program.

For more information and an application, call the Mariposa Library, (209) 966-2140, email: karen.dusek@mariposalibrary.org, or stop by the Library during normal hours of operation. Leave your name and phone number or e-mail address and the Literacy Coordinator will contact you.
