May 6, 2021 - TUOLUMNE COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) opened Sonora Pass on State Route 108 at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2021, for the summer season.

Crews have removed snow and ice, cleared debris, and made necessary repairs to the roadway to help ensure the public’s safety.

Meanwhile, District 10 crews are working diligently, performing significant repaving work at Route 4/Ebbetts Pass. The work, scheduled to begin the week of May 10, must be completed to safely open the roadway.

Each year, District 10’s goal is to open Monitor, Ebbetts and Sonora passes no later than the Friday prior to Memorial Day weekend.

Late-season storms, snow accumulation and resources sometimes can hinder this goal.

However, due to light rain and snow this year, District 10 was able to open Monitor Pass on April 9. Sonora Pass now is open in time for Mother’s Day weekend, and Ebbetts Pass likely will open well before Memorial Day weekend.

District 10’s top priority is safety for the traveling public.

Though Monitor and Sonora passes are open, motorists still should be prepared for emergencies as the weather and road conditions can change rapidly. Caltrans sometimes will close the road when late-season storms affect the region.

Visit http://www.quickmap.dot.ca.gov for the latest road conditions or call our Road Condition Hotline at (800) 427-ROAD (7623).

Caltrans crews responsible for the road opening extend their best wishes for safe traveling to those who enjoy the recreational opportunities the Sierra Nevada Mountains have to offer.

For the safety of workers and other motorists, Be Alert in the Work Zone.
