Over the Garden Fence

May 16, 2021 - Do you want to start a garden or make changes to your landscape but don’t know where to start? Do you have pests on your plants that you can’t identify? Or volunteer plants that you would like to identify? The UC Master Gardeners are here to help!

The Mariposa Master Gardener Helpline is open to answer gardening questions and to help homeowners solve gardening problems. We are available by phone or voice mail (209) 966-7078 or by email at mgmariposa@ucdavis.edu. It is helpful to send a photo attachment if there is a problem with an insect or plant disease.

Helpline volunteers answer questions using research based information from University of California. We also have access to UC Agricultural Advisors who provide expert information about home orchards and gardening.

The Helpline volunteers answer a wide variety of questions. Some of the commonly asked questions are about oak diseases and why oaks are dying.  People want to know what kinds of trees and shrubs to plant when replacing oaks. Another common question is about plant identification and insect identification and whether the insects are dangerous or are a problem in their garden. Also, people often want to know what plants are appropriate to plant at their elevation. We get questions about native plants for landscaping and herbs and edible vegetables to plant in gardens.

The Helpline is open Tuesdays from 9:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. and Thursdays from 2:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M. Clients may bring samples to the Agricultural Extension Office located at the Mariposa Fairgrounds, but the Master Gardener office is not open to the public. We will not be doing home visits this year due to UCANR restrictions.

For assistance, contact our Helpline at (209) 966-7078 or at mgmariposa@ucdavis.edu. We are currently unable to take samples or meet with you in person but welcome pictures.
