Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hanford CA 432 AM PDT Mon Jul 5 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Temperatures through Tuesday will remain fairly steady and slightly above average. A strong ridge will then build across the region starting Wednesday, and will continue to strengthen into the weekend. We`ll see an extended period of dangerously hot temperatures across the district through at least the end of the 7-day forecast period. && .DISCUSSION... Latest water vapor imagery is showing a dry southwesterly flow aloft which has pushed out all residual monsoon moisture from the Sierra. Today`s temperatures will be a carbon copy of Sunday. Locations in the SJV and Sierra foothills will hover around the century mark, with the Kern desert between 102-108. These temperatures across the district are around 3 to 6 degrees above for early July. There continues to be strong consensus between the ensembles in the evolution of the synoptic pattern through the week and into the weekend. The high pressure ridge currently centered over the four corners will slowly strengthen and retrograde back west toward southern NV/UT by Thursday. Through the end of the 7-day period next Monday, the ensembles all strongly indicate that the high pressure will continue to retrograde west toward central CA as well as further strengthen into an anomalously strong 600 decameter H5 high. With this anomalous ridge in place, temperatures will increase to dangerous levels by as early as Wednesday in the Kern desert and Kern River Valley. The latest NBM guidance is showing a 60% chance of 110 degrees or greater for China Lake by Wednesday. This increases to between a 80% to 100% chance of 110 degrees or greater by Thursday through at least next Monday. Low temperatures in these respective areas will continue to increase through the week, with some locations having overnight lows reaching into the mid to upper 80s starting Saturday. Dangerously hot temperatures will then return to the rest of the SJV, West Side mountains, and Sierra Foothills by Friday. This oppressive heat will then continue across the entire district through at least Monday. The NBM is currently showing a better than 60% chance of at least 105 degrees for a majority of these respective areas starting on Friday. Low temperatures will slowly trend up during this period of time, with city locations having upper 70s to mid-80s in some areas by Friday. Bottom line, there is growing confidence that we`ll see an extended period of very hot afternoon temperatures. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions will prevail elsewhere throughout Central California for the next 24 hours. && .AIR QUALITY ISSUES... On Monday July 5 2021... Unhealthy for sensitive groups in Fresno...
