July 9, 2021 - On Thursday, Congressman Kevin McCarthy released the following:

California Republican Delegation Statement on Governor Newsom’s 15% voluntary water Kevin House Maj. Leader Kevin McCarthy official photoconservation request.

Today, Governor Newsom called on all Californians to reduce water consumption on a voluntary basis by 15%. The California Republican congressional delegation, including Congressman Kevin McCarthy and Reps. Doug LaMalfa (CA-01), Tom McClintock (CA-04), David Valadao (CA-21), Devin Nunes (CA-22), Mike Garcia (CA-25), Jay Obernolte (CA-08), Young Kim (CA-39), Michelle Steel (CA-48), Darrell Issa (CA-50), and Ken Calvert (CA-42) issued the below statement:

“As we move into the hottest part of the driest year on record since 1977, this should be a clarion call to Governor Newsom, Sacramento Democrats, and California’s congressional Democrats to reassess their position and support an all-of-the-above water plan that includes not only conservation, recycling, and desalination, but also critical surface water storage projects, like the proposed shovel-ready Shasta Dam raise. If Shasta Dam and Sisk Dam had been raised and Sites Reservoir built, our State would have been in a better position to weather this drought by capturing water in 2017, one of the wettest years on record since the early 1980s. That said, we welcome all willing participants to join us at the table to get these and other projects done to improve water supply security and drought resiliency in California. Continuing to wait on these projects leaves us in the same weak position our State is currently in for any potential future droughts.”
