MCSO near drowning

July 27, 2021 - Late last week, the Madera County Sheriff’s Boat Patrol Unit was dispatched to a possible drowning on Bass Lake.

An adult male swam out to a buoy with his sister for a friendly swim competition and started having trouble, causing him to panic and tread water for several minutes. His family was able to assist him back to shore, where deputies transported him to awaiting medical personnel. He was life flighted to a regional hospital for treatment and observation.

MCSO would like to take this opportunity to remind the public about the dangers of the water, even for strong swimmers, and even from shore.

Water Recreation Safety Tips:

  • Always ensure that there is an adult supervisor when children are swimming
  • Never leave a child alone in or near water and teach them the buddy system
  • Swim only in designated swim areas and use a life vest for small children
  • Don't let kids dive deep into the water around boats or jet skis that are moored in the water near the shoreline
  • Learn CPR for the safety of others
  • Be careful of underwater currents and wave action/ fast waters
  • Know your own swimming abilities and don't overdo it when in the water
  • Avoid heat stroke and drink plenty of fluids (water)
  • Avoid using drugs or alcohol in extreme heat, which may affect your swimming abilities
