Both pilots were fatally injured. firefighters credit nifcThe firefighting community extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Ninety-five large fires and complexes have burned 2,257,151 acres in 15 states. To date, 37,774 wildfires have burned 5,546,024 acres. Both of these numbers are well above the 10-year average.

Texas A&M Forest Service and Oklahoma Forestry Services have issued a fuels and fire behavior advisory for central Texas and Oklahoma. The advisory highlights the ongoing drought, extremely hot temperatures and lack of rainfall that has caused very dry fuels in these states. This continues to influence the potential fire new wildfires and the fire behavior associated with them. Our forests, parks and rangelands are a natural treasure so please do your part in protecting the open spaces we all value. Enjoy your public lands and protect them by doing your part in fire prevention. Remember check for fire restrictions in your local area before you go. If a campfire is  allowed, make sure it is dead out by using dirt and water when stirring the coals. Use a shovel to help properly extinguish your campfire and keep it nearby, just in case. Be careful with matches and lighters and carefully extinguish all smoking materials. Together we can prevent wildfires.

Weather

A weak low will move inland across the Pacific Northwest today, keeping temperatures in that region near normal. Scattered thunderstorms are expected this afternoon along the Canadian border in Washington, Idaho and western Montana as the low progresses eastward. The northern Plains and the northern and western portions of the Great Basin will continue to experience hot, dry and breezy conditions. Severe thunderstorms are expected in portions of the Upper Midwest, with strong winds and hail possible. Across the southern Plains and northern Texas, temperatures will rise a few degrees, for highs between 100-105oF. Scattered thunderstorms are possible in southeastern Texas, southern Louisiana and eastward along the Gulf Coast. Monsoonal moisture will remain primarily south and east of the Four Corners this afternoon, limiting most thunderstorm activity to the Colorado Rockies, and elevated terrain of the Southwest. California will see another day of above normal temperatures statewide.
