February 28, 2023 - Yosemite National Park officials announce Peregrine falcon breeding season is upon us and our beloved falcons are busy re-establishing their territories throughout the park. Please help us respect peregrine falcons nesting in Yosemite by complying with seasonal climbing closures. We maintain closures to ensure peregrines can continue to grow their once endangered population. In 2022, we recorded 17 successful breeding pairs, the highest number to date. Thanks to years of interdisciplinary management and commitment from our community to respect closure zones, peregrines have rebounded from a nearly extirpated population of only two wild breeding pairs in California during the early 1970's
Starting Wednesday, March 1, closures go into effect at Arch Rock, B.O.L.T. Wall, El Capitan SW Face, Fairview Dome, Hetch Hetchy, Higher Cathedral Rock, Mt. Broderick, The Rostrum, Wawona Dome, Widow's Tears Alcove, and Yosemite Point.
This year begins with fewer closure locations than in past years:If you want to climb at any of these areas, please check the closure notice first to make sure you are complying with the closures and not disturbing any nesting peregrines. The list of current closures can be found below and will be updated throughout the breading season.
