October 10, 2023 - One new large wildfire was reported in Florida yesterday. Currently, 19 large wildfires have burned 321,940 acres in nine 
states. About 3,700 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents nationwide.
Even in October, it's important to pay close attention to weather conditions, which can affect the flammability of vegetation. According to the National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook, produced by the predictive services staff at the National Interagency Coordination Center above normal fire potential is expected in several southeastern states.The current wildland fire potential outlook and the monthly seasonal outlook podcast is also available. Breezy southwesterly sustained winds of 12-25 mph with gusts 25-40 mph amid relative humidity of 10-25% will develop ahead of a cold front across much of the Great Basin, Desert Southwest, and greater Four Corners. Breezy southerly winds of 10-20 mph will develop across portions of the southern High Plains as well. Widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue across the Pacific Northwest into the northern Great Basin and northern Rockies, with snow levels as low as 6,000 feet. Westerly winds of 10-15 mph will create localized elevated conditions across the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys into the Southeast. Deep subtropical moisture will move into south Texas and produce widespread wetting rain and localized flooding. Well below normal temperatures will continue from the Midwest to the Northeast with scattered showers continuing downwind of the Great Lakes.
