October 10, 2023 - MARIPOSA – Cooler weather has arrived and there’s a hint of rain in the air, but don’t let these conditions trick you into burning.

Burn permits are still suspended and debris burning is not allowed.

Cal fireThe California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit (MMU) wants residents to remain vigilant when it comes to fire safety.

Here are a few tips on how to minimize the threat of fire.
• Debris burning is NOT allowed. Citations will be issued to anyone burning debris. CAL FIRE will inform the public via Facebook and notification to the media that will inform residents when burning will resume.

• Lawn mowers are designed to mow lawns. Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation. Use a weed trimmer to cut down dry weeds and tall grass and be sure spark arrestors are on all portable gasoline powered equipment.

• Properly maintain all vehicles and mechanized equipment. Don’t drive or park in dry grass or brush and secure all safety chains if pulling a trailer.

• If you plan to use your fireplace, clean the chimney flue before use.

• Keep a cell phone nearby and call 911 immediately in case of a fire.
