January 11, 2024 - WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, U.S. Senators Alex Padilla and Laphonza Butler (both D-Calif.) released the following statement after the White House announced that President Biden nominated Judge Rebecca Kanter to fill the vacancy on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California:

“We commend President Biden’s nomination of Judge Rebecca Kanter to serve on the Federal District Court for the Southern District of California. Judge Kanter has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service throughout her career, from her time on the bench with the San Diego County Superior Court to her 16 years as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District U.S. Attorney’s Office. The great-granddaughter of Jewish immigrants who fled persecution in Eastern Europe and a former civil rights coordinator in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Judge Kanter will undoubtedly bring her profound dedication to justice, fairness, and equality to the Southern District of California. We look forward to working with our Senate colleagues to swiftly approve her nomination.”

Judge Rebecca S. Kanter: Nominee for the United States District Court for the Southern District of California

Judge Rebecca S. Kanter has been a judge on the San Diego County Superior Court since 2023. Judge Kanter previously worked as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California from 2006 to 2022, where she focused much of her time prosecuting major fraud and public corruption cases. From 2004 to 2006, Judge Kanter was an associate in the Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles offices of O’Melveny & Myers LLP. She served as a law clerk for Judge Harry L. Hupp and Chief Judge Consuelo B. Marshall on the U.S. District for the Central District of California. Judge Kanter received her J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 2003 and her B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of California, Irvine in 2000.
