July 9, 2024 – Mariposa County Fish and Game Protective Association announces that the shooting range situated on the Long family property at 4443 Old Highway is slated to close.
As of July 6th the Mariposa County Fish and Games Protective Association shooting range is closed.
It seems that the 50+ year relationship with the Long family must come to an end, and therefore so does the public service offering of a Shooting range.
Time changes everything.
The range has not been self-sustaining for many years. The club has pulled resources from other income streams to maintain the offering of the range to the public. But the last several years of gun legislation, COVID, inflation, and a lack of steady revenue have proven extremely difficult and taken its toll on the income stream that the range was able to produce to comply with the road maintenance terms of the lease.
The drastic increase in insurance, cost of materials, (gravel) and maintenance (grader and operator) for the range road is above and beyond what this nonprofit club can afford during these times.
Unfortunately this means that the public will no longer have a legitimate, safe shooting range for target practice, or to get ready for a competition, or prepare for hunting season in Mariposa County.
We were really looking forward to offering you opportunities to participate in more educational events but alas this chapter of the club’s legacy must close. We truly appreciate all of your years of patronage and support for the public events that we have been able to accomplish at the range to date. It has been a pleasure being able to serve you and we will have many fond memories of our time at the range with you.
This does not mean that the club has closed its doors, we are still in operation at the clubhouse property at 5056 Darrah Road. The clubhouse can still be rented for your family gatherings, baby shows, anniversary parties, wedding receptions and more. The Mariposa County Fish and Game Protective Association will be looking to get back to its roots and be looking for more ways to engage the public and its membership in conservation, education and outdoor activities.
If you have ideas or interest in joining the club and sharing your skills and knowledge about conservation, outdoor activities, or just want to make a few new friends please come join us at one of our monthly dinner meetings the third Thursday of every month.
