CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit Officers Arrest One for Unlawfully Causing a Fire
August 23, 2024 – CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit officials report that on Wednesday, August 21st, 2024, at
approximately 4:42 P.M., the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) received report of a vegetation fire behind Ace Hardware (74 Highway 26 Valley Springs, CA). Prior to the arrival of CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit (TCU) Law Enforcement, a witness called and said the subject had fled the scene towards San Andreas, CA. With the help of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Department, a subject was detained.
CAL FIRE TCU Law Enforcement officers subsequently arrested David Cunningham (39) of Burson, CA, for violating Penal Code 452(c)—unlawfully causing a fire on forest land. The Ace Fire burned 16.3 acres of grass.
CAL FIRE TCU would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to be vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities. If you see a suspicious person, vehicle, or any other activity prior to, during, or after a fire, take pictures, video recordings, and/or write down detailed information.
