September 2, 2024 – Turlock Police Department officials report that on August 28th, just after 6:30 p.m., Officers Khounlivong and Ruiz were dispatched to investigate a disturbance in progress at Columbia Park. The caller reported a man yelling that he was going to “shoot up everyone” at the park.

Officer Khounlivong was the first to arrive on the scene and quickly located a person matching the description. As Officer Khounlivong was attempting to get a statement from the male, the man suddenly fled, leading to a struggle during which he was brought to the ground. Officer Ruiz was the second officer on scene and noticed a firearm in the man’s pocket while his partner was restraining him. The suspect, later identified as 48-year-old Michael Thompson of Turlock, was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm.

Michael, who has a prior conviction for manslaughter, was booked into jail on a range of charges, including resisting arrest and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Great job to Officers Khounlivong and Ruiz for their swift response and apprehension of the suspect, and to the vigilant caller who reported the situation. This is a strong reminder: if you see something, say something.
