Mountain Lion Concerns & What You Can Do
September 20, 2024 – Placer County Sheriff's Office officials report that so far this year they’ve received 22 calls about Mountain Lions in Placer County. While most are to report sightings, we have received calls of Mountain Lions attacking livestock or domestic pets this year.
In 2023, we received a total of 23 calls about Mountain Lions. Two of those were to report a direct threat to human life. One call reported three Mountain Lions were circling a group of friends in the Colfax area and the second was from the Roseville area where a Mountain Lion was in a tree and charged at a person. Thankfully, no one was hurt in either incident.
We don’t share these numbers to scare anyone. We want to assure our community; we hear your concern.
What do you do?
If you ever feel your life is threatened, call 911 and our deputies will be there. In situations that don’t warrant calling 911, the Placer County Agriculture Commissioner’s office is here to help you figure out the next steps. You can contact them at (530) 889-7372.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is ultimately responsible for Mountain Lion related calls. You can contact them at (916) 358-2917.
