October 29, 2024 - SACRAMENTO – On Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom issued the following statement regarding the death of Barstow Fire Protection District Fire Captain Garret Miller:
“Our heartfelt sympathies are with Fire Captain Miller’s family, friends, colleagues and everyone grieving his passing. His bravery and dedication to protecting Californians will never be forgotten.”
Fire Captain Garret Miller, 44, passed away on October 21, 2024 as a result of an on-duty medical emergency.
He joined the Barstow Fire Protection District in 2017. Fire Captain Miller also served as a member of the U.S. Forest Service-San Bernardino National Forest and Fort Irwin Fire Department. He is survived by his three children.
In honor of Fire Captain Miller, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our Brother Garret Miller as a result of an on-duty medical emergency while assigned to ME366.
Captain Miller has served as a member of the Barstow Fire Protection District since September 10, 2017. He also served as a member of the United States Forrest Service-San Bernardino National Forrest and Fort Irwin Fire Department.
Our brother Garret passed peacefully last night surrounded by his family and loved ones. At this time we ask that you please keep the Miller Family in your thoughts and prayers.
Currently, we are supporting the Miller family during this difficult time and initiating the planning to suit fit for his celebration of life which is tentatively scheduled for November 13, 2024 at Victor Valley College.
