Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Dog 

November 6, 2024 – Grass Valley, CA – Nevada County Sheriff's Office officials report that Kevin Barber, 52, of Grass Valley, was arrested on November 4 after allegedly shooting and killing a dog on his property.

The first 911 call was received by the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) Regional Dispatch Center at 10:22 a.m. on November 4. The witness reported seeing Barber shoot and kill a dog with a shotgun on his property. The dog was later determined to belong to a neighbor in the community, not associated with Barber or the 911 caller.

NCSO deputies responded to Barber’s residence in the 14000 block of Brooks Rd. in Grass Valley. Barber was not present upon the deputies’ arrival, having reportedly fled, but he was intercepted soon after by NCSO Animal Control officers down the street. NCSO deputies arrested Barber for §597(a) – Animal Cruelty, which makes it a crime to intentionally maim, mutilate, torture, wound, or kill a living animal. He was transported without incident to Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.

Based on the nature of the alleged crime, NCSO deputies obtained a search warrant the same day for Barber’s property. A shotgun utilized in the reported shooting was seized for evidence, along with a spent shell casing, and an unspent shell casing.

The investigation thus far has revealed no indication that Barber was under attack or in imminent danger at the time of the shooting incident; the witness also noted the dog was not acting aggressively.

This case remains under investigation and the totality of the dog’s injuries are pending necropsy. Witnesses to the animal shooting are encouraged to come forward with information.
