November 26, 2024 – Oakhurst, CA – The Yosemite Gateway Prescribed Burn Cooperative (YGPBC) is excited to announce a series of events to kick off the 2024 prescribed burn season in Mariposa and Madera Counties. These events are aimed at raising awareness about prescribed burning and providing residents with opportunities to gain skills and learn about prescribed burning resources.

Event Schedule: 

YGPBC Happy Hour – Mariposa County

  • Where: The Alley (back patio), 5027 CA-140, Mariposa
  • When: Wednesday, December 11, from 5:30 P.M. – 7:30 P.M.
  • What: Engage with YGPBC members and learn about prescribed burning efforts in Mariposa County.

YGPBC Happy Hours – Madera County

  • Where: Idle Hour Winery and Kitchen, 41139 CA-41, Oakhurst
  • When: Thursday, December 12, from 5:30 P.M. – 7:30 P.M.
  • What: Meet the YGPBC team and learn about prescribed burning in Madera County in a casual setting.

Learn & Burn – Classroom Day

  • Where: Yosemite Adult School, 49948 High School Road, Oakhurst
  • When: Saturday, December 14, from 9:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.
  • What: A classroom-based introduction to prescribed fire covering safety, weather, firing operations, and other essential skills for prescribed burning. Registration is required.

Learn & Burn – Field Day

(Weather Permitting)
  • Where: Location TBD (dependent on weather conditions)
  • When: Sunday, December 15, from 9:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.
  • What: A hands-on opportunity to apply skills learned during the classroom session. Registration is required.

Why Prescribed Burning?

Burn Season Kickoff
Prescribed burns are controlled, intentionally set fires planned to occur under specified parameters, known as a prescription, and applied to achieve specific objectives. Prescribed burns are a critical tool used to reduce wildfire risk and promote ecological health in California.

This project is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing GHG emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment– particularly in disadvantaged communities. The Cap-and-Trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution.
